Computers & Internet Use

In response to advances in technology and to the changing needs of the SMCC community, the Library offers resources and services that meet the educational, informational, cultural, and recreational needs of SMCC's diverse user community.

SMCC Library does not monitor and has no control of the information on the Internet, nor has the library installed any barriers to the access of the full range of information available.  There may be sites accessible via the Internet which may contain material that is illegal, inflammatory, inaccurate or potentially offensive to some people.  While the Library's intent in the provision of the Internet access is to further the college's educational goals and objectives, users of Library computers will have the ability to access other materials as well.

Library users may access their preferences in text and images so long as they are mindful that computers are located in public areas shared by people of all ages and backgrounds.  Internet users must be considerate and respectful of other library users.  The SMCC Library will not condone anything perceived as sexual, ethnic, or hate harassment, or any other kind of harassment.  In addition, the MCCCD Computing Resource Standards prohibits the use of computing resources for "...transmitting, storing, or receiving data, or otherwise using computing resources in a manner that would constitute a violation of state or federal law, including (but not limited to) obscenity, defamation, threats, harassment, and theft."

As with all other Library materials, restriction of a child's access to the Internet is the responsibility of the parent/legal guardian.  The parents/legal guardians of minors are responsible for setting and enforcing the standard that their child/ward should follow.  In addition, parents/legal guardians shall not instruct Library staff to assume responsibility for imposing restrictions on their children.

Computer Use

  • Academic research is given first priority for the use of computer workstations.
  • Staff may ask library users to give up computers for use by students in scheduled class instruction sessions.
  • Users may only use one computer at a time.
  • Print only those items which you really need for school assignments so the Library can continue to offer free printing.
  • Library users under 18 years of age must be prepared to show their library card to use the computers.
  • Library computers are NOT to be used for recreational chat sessions or games.
  • Do not change any computer settings.  For example, do not change the "Home" location or the "wallpaper" or background design.
  • Do not save any work to the computers in the Library as user documents are erased each night.
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Powerpoint, and Excel) are installed on all public computers in the Library. Librarians will provide basic assistance with using this software, but you may wish to enroll in a BPC class for more detailed instruction on using these products.
